SONiC presents 3/30, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of three iconic albums. Nirvana’s Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. It’s insane, all 3 albums came out on the same day, September 24th, 30 years ago. So here are some sweet facts, part 2/3: Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

  1. The album was actually recorded in Harry Houdini’s haunted mansion. According to John Frusciante, the ghosts were “very friendly. We [the band] have nothing but warm vibes and happiness everywhere we go in this house.” While the rest of the band lived in the house, drummer Chad Smith refused to sleep in the mansion due to the ghosts and would arrive by motorcycle each day.
  2. The album includes pots and pans used as percussion.
  3. Guitarist John Frusciante quit the band mid-tour due to anxiety with the sudden fame and tour requirements.
  4. “Under The Bridge” was initially a poem written by Kiedis found by producer Rick Rubin. He convinced Kiedis to show the rest of the band, and it became a song. Frusciante’s mother Gale sings with the choir on the song.
  5. Anthony Kiedis wrote “Breaking The Girl” after a tumultuous breakup with model Carmen Hawke.
  6. 25 songs were written for the album, 8 of which were scrapped including “Soul to Squeeze”, which became a hit two years later after being released on the Coneheads soundtrack.
