Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. It’s the last weekend of Edmonton’s Downtown Dining Week

Until Sunday, you can support local businesses by ordering takeout or visiting the patio of your favourite Downtown Dining Week restaurant. There are plenty of options from fine dining to casual eateries, with special menus at set prices.

There are also expanded patios opened for Downtown Dining Week! Sections of 104 street will be closed off to vehicular traffic on Saturday April 24th and Sunday, April 25th to make room for social distancing.

2. Watch The Art Gallery of Alberta’s Sidewalk Cinema

On April 23rd, The Art Gallery of Alberta’s Sidewalk Cinema is opening as part of Downtown Spark’s Arts District Animation! This event will include a series of outdoor installations, exhibits, and al fresco performances.

“Over the course of the year, AGA Sidewalk Cinema exhibitions will change to feature a wide variety of digital works, created by artists, arts partnerships and community collaborations. The first AGA Sidewalk Cinema exhibition features a selection of digital video and film works created by Alberta Artists.”

You can also still check out the other unique outdoor digital exhibits like The Winspear Window Watching Experience and The Citadel Theatre’s Window to New Works.

3. See who takes home the most Oscars at the Academy Awards

This Sunday, April 25th you can watch the 93rd Annual Academy Awards on ABC. There will be no host this year, however multiple big names will be presenting the categories like Harrison Ford, Joaquin Phoenix, Halle Berry and Brad Pitt.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails have been nominated for two Oscars this year, for Best Original Score for “Soul” and “Mank”. According to Billboard, Reznor described the nominations as “surreal and humbling and incredibly flattering.”

You can see if they take home those awards at 6 p.m. To find out where to watch the Oscars click here.
