Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Watch Mother Mother’s virtual concert

Mother Mother have announced a livestream quarantine performance, for Friday November 20th. The indie alternative band will perform virtually for fans across the world, with the addition of a Q&A and “maayybee” even some unreleased material. The first performance filled up pretty fast, but they did announce a second show taking place later on the same evening.

You can get tickets here.

2. Drive through The Canadian Tire Magic of Lights at Castrol Raceway

Tomorrow Castrol Raceway opens The Canadian Tire Magic of Lights. This event is extra socially distant, because you get to drive-through 2.5 kilometers of LED-lighted displays from the comfort of your own car. There are over 1 million lights that make up animations and different holiday scenes.

“This year’s light show will feature some favorite displays from previous years, including “12 Days of Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” and “The Night Before Christmas,” plus the new “Ornament Alley.””

The light display runs from November 20th until January 2nd.

You can watch a video from last year below, to get an idea of how it looks.

3. Kick-off the season with one of YEG’s many Christmas markets

This weekend is the kick-off for a lot of Christmas markets here in the city, so why not get a head start on your Christmas shopping by supporting local!

This Saturday, November 21st, the Alberta Avenue Christmas Market is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Alberta Avenue Community Centre. There’s also the Old Strathcona Artisan Market, open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre, and the St. Albert Indoor Christmas Market which is open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at The Enjoy Centre.
