This year things are a little different due to the pandemic, so we thought we’d give you some information on how the City of Edmonton will safely honour and remember our veterans this Remembrance Day.

1. There will be no in-person ceremonies this year.

The city is encouraging private reflection on Remembrance Day this year, meaning unfortunately there will be no Remembrance Day ceremony at City Hall, and no formal wreath laying ceremony outside the Cenotaph on the City Hall Plaza. However, poppies can be left at a local Cenotaph if this can be done safely while following the guidelines in place by AHS.

You can read a note from the City of Edmonton below:

“To honour our military veterans, serving members, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country in times of war and peace, Edmontonians are encouraged to observe this important day in other meaningful ways. This can be done by observing a private moment of reflection, making poppies to hang in your window, or taking time to learn about Canada’s rich military history. Find more commemorative ideas here.”

2. Edmonton will be lit up in red as it has previous years.

Some traditions thankfully don’t have to change. During Remembrance Day this year The High Level Bridge, Muttart Conservatory, Walterdale Bridge, City Hall and Rossdale Power Plant will be lit up with the colour red once again.

3. ETS will be free for military personnel.

Edmonton Transit services are free on November 11th to all past and present military personnel as well as RCMP. You must be in a military uniform or legion dress, and have either a Canadian Forces, Veterans’ card, National Defence Record card, or an RCMP identification card with you as well.

Transit hours will also be reduced. You can use the ETS Trip Planner to work around new route times.

SONiC will be participating in the moment of silence at 11 a.m.

Stay safe! Please stay home if you are feeling sick and follow all COVID-19 safety precautions. Keep informed at alberta.ca/coronavirus.
