Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Listen to some new/old music

On Friday, September 18th, there are some expanded, reissued, and new albums coming out. The Cranberries are releasing No Need to Argue (Expanded Edition) which will feature 19 previously unreleased tracks. You may be thinking how the heck have we not heard 19 tracks from The Cranberries, well there will be old demos, extras, live recordings, remixes, and a ton more.
Next on the list is a vinyl reissue of David Bowie’s Young Americans album from 1975, to celebrate it’s 45th anniversary. It will be pressed on limited edition gold-coloured vinyl.
That same day we’re getting new music from Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. It’s a solo album, Dropped Frames, Vol. 3. However, this album may be pretty different from his work in Linkin Park as Shinoda also recently released a song called “License to Waltz”, which sounds like it came straight out of an old school video game.

You can pre-order it by clicking here.

2. Hangout with Dan Mangan over Zoom

On Saturday, September 19th, Dan Mangan is hosting a Zoom call to perform some music and talk with fans.

“I’ll be doing Q&A and discussing some history behind the songs and how they came to fruition. I’ll be sure to tell the story of getting robbed in Los Angeles just hours before Paul McCartney interrupted our studio session. “Oh, sorry”, he said.”

You can get your tickets to the Zoom call here.

3. Participate virtually in the 2020 Terry Fox Run

This Sunday, September 20th is the annual Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox Run is going virtual this year due to recent events, but that means you can run from anywhere! You can participate whether it’s by sprinting across town or jogging in front of your house.

This year is actually the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, which started April 12, 1980. You can register with your family, by yourself or on a virtual team.
