You may recognize Matt Maeson from his hit song “Cringe”. He’s a 27-year-old singer-songwriter from Norfolk, Virginia, who up until he was a teen was banned from listening to secular music on the radio. His parents were “juvenile delinquents” who later became “musician-aries” and travelled to prisons preaching reform with their Christian metal band. At 19, he became addicted to drugs and later served time in jail. After he was released, he spent time doing community service and performed in prisons and at biker rallies as part of his parents’ ministry.

“Hallucinogenics” recounts a time in his life when he was very depressed following the end of the 2017 tour of his “Who Killed Matt Maeson EP”.

“I’d worked very hard to get my life back on track after years of bad decisions at that point…I was so drained and after everyone went home I stayed in Seattle to unwind,” he told Billboard. “One of the nights I just kind of broke and made a lot of decisions that I regret.”

He also said, “I came to the conclusion that failure like that doesn’t define my life…it’s how I handle that failure and turn it into wisdom for how I navigate the future.”
