Stephen Hawking has passed away at the age of 76.

Considered by many to be one the greatest scientists of our time, the English theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author paved the way for modern science. Along with fellow physicist Roger Penrose, Hawking successfully merged Einstein’s theory of relativity with quantum theory – suggesting that time and space began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes. Through his work he discovered that black holes were not completely black, but that they emit radiation, eventually evaporating and disappearing.

Hawking lived with ALS, a disease that kills neurons that control voluntary movement. The disease gradually paralyzed him over decades. Following the loss of his speech, Hawking continued to communicate through a speech-generating device, initially through use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.

Hawking was set to appear at the 2015 Glastonbury Music Festival, but he was forced to cancel due to poor health. In 1998, he guest starred on an episode of The Simpsons.
