Alternative Weekends With Brooklyn

It’s the most wonderful time of the week – the end! Each Thursday, Brooklyn rounds up all of the weekend events, concerts, festivals, and more that you should know about. Here’s what’s going on in Edmonton this weekend.

1. A Day To Listen

In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, SONiC 102.9 is proud to partner with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) on A DAY TO LISTEN 2023.

The first A DAY TO LISTEN took place on June 30, 2021, following the public announcement that the remains of 215 children were buried at the site of the former Kamloops Residential School. With more than 540 radio stations participating, spanning different markets, regions, and formats, A DAY TO LISTEN leveraged the power of radio to inspire people throughout Canada to move reconciliation forward in meaningful ways.

Listen live from Saturday, September 30 from 6 am – 6 pm and hear from hosts Aysanabee, William Prince, and ShoShana Kish.

2. Orange Shirt Day Walk and Run

The Orange Shirt Day Walk and Run honours our little ancestors who did not survive the Residential school era and in support and solidarity for the survivors who fight every day for healing and justice. This event aims to raise funds for Orangeshirtday.org as well as local grassroots movements including promoting and supporting Indigenous athletes. This will be a combination of pavement and trail run through the beautiful YEG river valley trails starting at Kinsmen Park and includes three distances of 5 & 10 km and a kids 2.15 km.
