Over a decade after it was first released, Avatar is getting its long-awaited sequel.

Avatar: The Way of Water picks up where the last film ended, with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) choosing to leave his human body behind to live as a Na’vi with his partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). The film will follow their journey as a family. As star Sigourney Weaver said, “The story is about family, about our families trying to stay together [and] the lengths to which we all go to protect each other and protect the place where we live.”

Worthington and Saldana will reprise their roles alongside Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, and CCH Pounder. Weaver will be in the film but as a new character. Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, and Jermaine Clement have been added to the cast.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released internationally on December 14. Director James Cameron has revealed that Avatar 3 is already complete and that he has plans to release it in 2024 followed by Avatar 4 in 2026, and Avatar 5 in 2028.
