The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honoured with the Global Icon Award at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28th, an award they dedicated to the late Taylor Hawkins. “The Global Icon Award celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career, continued impact, and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.”

This was the second time ever that the Global Icon Award has been presented at the VMAs in North America. They were previously handed out at the MTV Europe Music Awards leaving the Chili’s to join a list of winners that includes Bon Jovi, Eminem, Liam Gallagher, Green Day, Foo Fighters and more.

The band also performed at the VMA’s for the first time since 2000, performing Black Summer (which also won the award for “Best Rock Video” and Can’t Stop.
