Each Tuesday and Sunday, Taylor rounds up this week’s best new music with the New Music Discovery Show. Here’s one of our favourites.

Fake Shark – Loser

Fake Shark was formed in Vancouver during 2005 under the name Fake Shark – Real Zombie!, inspired by the film Zombi 2, where zombies and sharks engage in combat.

The band released their debut album in 2007, and have released four since. Much of their popularity began in the mid 2000’s on MySpace (they recruited their bassist and drummer on Craigslist). They’ve toured with bands including Hot Hot Heat, Marianas Trench, Jeffree Star, and more.

Released in September, “Loser” tells the story of someone drowning in their problems. Frontman Kevvy Mental explained, “Loser is a song written from the perspective of someone who’s just addicted to making life-destroying choices and they’re envious of people with self-control. The video was conceptualized by the brilliant director Sterling Larose, who’s done hit videos for Mother Mother and Son Real, and it’s about leaning into your problems and owning them and becoming famous for them.”
