SONiC presents 3/30, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of three iconic albums. Nirvana’s Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. It’s insane, all 3 albums came out on the same day, September 24th, 30 years ago. So here are some sweet facts, part 1/3: Nevermind.

  1. Dave Grohl is not the only drummer on Nevermind. Chad Channing, who played on their 1989 debut Bleach, drummed on a few demos before losing the job to Grohl.
  2. They refused to go on tour with Guns N’ Roses. Axel Rose even personally asked them but Kurt Cobian said, “They’re really talentless people, and they write crap music.”
  3. They were kicked out of their own release party after tossing around a watermelon filled with ranch dressing.
  4. They almost broke up after the release of the album. Cobain wanted a larger cut of the profits, causing Grohl and Novoselic to almost quit the band.
  5. Cobain was offered the role of the heroin dealer in Pulp Fiction. Courtney Love shared the info, saying that’s why Quentin Tarantino is thanked in the liner notes of Nevermind’s follow-up album In Utero.
  6. Kurt Cobain admitted that he was trying to rip off Pixies when writing “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. It was also one of the last songs written for the album and is a reference to Teen Spirit deodorant. Hear a fun explanation below.
