Alternative Weekends with Chantal

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1.  Hear a brand new album from Rise Against

Friday, June 4th, Rise Against are releasing their first new album in four years called Nowhere Generation. So far out of the 11 tracks, the band has released the title track of the album, along with “The Numbers”, “Broken Dreams, Inc.”, and “Talking To Ourselves”.

Frontman Tim McIlrath gave insight into the new album, saying in a statement that, “Today there is the promise of the American Dream, and then there is the reality of the American Dream. America’s ‘historical norm’ that the next generation will be better off than the one that came before has been diminished by an era of mass social, economic, and political instability and a sell-out of the Middle Class. The brass ring that was promised by hard work and dedication no longer exists for everyone. When the privileged climb the ladder of success and then burn it from the top, disruption becomes the only answer.”

2. Enjoy Nextfest 2021, a free arts festival

Nextfest 2021 is a free online festival with music, film, poetry, theater, workshops, and more, all by local artists. “The Nextfest Arts Company is made up of hundreds of young and emerging artists from a wide variety of disciplines, banding together to present Edmonton’s most unique annual multi-disciplinary arts festival”.

The virtual event starts June 3rd and runs until June 13th. For more information click here.

3. Watch the 50th annual Juno Awards

The Junos are on this Sunday, June 6th, in Toronto.

Prior to the awards show, Leah and Peter of July Talk will be a part of the songwriters’ circle. There they will join more of “Canada’s finest songwriters together on stage for intimate performances and conversations about their songs and personal stories.” This performance will be on June 5th.

There will also be a special performance during the Juno Awards, from The Tragically Hip. They’ll be joined by Feist for their first live performance since Gord Downie’s passing.

“It’s been such a difficult year for our fellow musicians, we wanted to do something to honour them in a way that would make Gord smile,” the band said in a press release. The Hip will also be receiving the 2021 Humanitarian Award.
