Alternative Weekends with Chantal

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Listen to new albums from The Black Keys and The Beaches

On May 14th (which is also singer Dan Auerbach’s birthday), The Black Keys are releasing a brand new album full of blues songs called Delta Kream, which is a “celebration of their early inspiration”. The album will have 11 blues covers, including a cover they shared last month of Big Joe Williams’ “Crawling Kingsnake”Delta Kream will be the rock duo’s tenth studio album.

You can pre-save the album here.

On the same day, The Beaches are releasing their new EP Future Lovers.

“We recorded most of Future Lovers in Los Angeles with Jacknife [their producer] during The Professional sessions,” said The Beaches lead singer Jordan Miller in a press release. “But the pandemic gave us the opportunity to look at some of these songs and give them some new Beaches twists before they were released… You know, we’ve kind of all matured a little being stuck at home for over a year.”

You can listen to a new single off the album, called “Let’s Go”, here.

2. Hangout on a livestream with Vance Joy

Saturday, May 15th, Vance Joy is going to be livestreaming the second show of his Direct Line Sessions. The session held last month, hosted by Dan Mangan, was full of people from all over the world. Vance Joy performed a number of songs, and hosted a discussion/Q&A. A number of fans are spotlighted during the stream, a couple even got engaged during one of his performances!

This Saturday the livestream will be at 5:00 p.m. MDT.

3. Enjoy new stories with the Collider Festival

From May 12th to 16th, The Citadel Theatre is debuting the Collider Festival, which features play readings, workshops and more! This play development festival is online for 5 days, and helps celebrate and bring new stories to life while “showcasing a mix of local artists and artists from across the country”. One of the plays commissioned by The Citadel Theatre, Almost A Full Moon, is inspired by an album by Hawksley Workman!

The festival is free to register and attend, but space is limited. For more information click here.
