Alternative Weekends with Chantal

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out while you listen to that new Weezer album this weekend:

1. Watch Dave Grohl’s docuseries From Cradle to Stage

Why not celebrate the Mother’s Day weekend with a show about rockstars and their moms. On May 6, Dave Grohl is releasing From Cradle to Stage, which is a docuseries inspired by his mom Virginia Grohl’s 2017 book, From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars.

In a statement, Dave Grohl, who directed the project, said, “I believe that the relationship between a musician and their mother is so important because it’s the foundation of their understanding of love, which is surely every artist’s greatest muse. Having the opportunity to travel the country and tell the stories of these amazing women behind the curtain not only shed some light on the music that they inspired, but also made me appreciate the love that I was given from my own mother, my best friend. It goes without saying that we are all indebted to the women who have given us life. For without them, there would be no music.”

You can watch the docuseries on Paramount+.

Also on May 6th, Foo Fighters will be appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, on NBC.

2. Enjoy some local eats at the Free Wheelin’ Food Truck Festival

This Friday, May 7th, the Free Wheelin’ Food Truck Festival is happening from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m., at Kingsway Mall. In the parking lot you’ll find some amazing local businesses from the 124 Grand Market. Some of the options include Sosycal Scoops, Sheeba Street Food, Sir Winston’s Fish and Chips, Drift Food Truck, Jackie O’s, Calle Mexico, Coast Lunch Box, and Guilt Free Eats!

3. See the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Vancouver Canucks

This Saturday, May 8th you can watch the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Canucks at Rogers Place for the fourth time this week. Puck drop is at 8 p.m., and you can watch it on Sportsnet. You can also watch them face off tonight (May 6th) at 7 p.m.

Next week the Oilers have 3 more games, then that’s it for the regular season. The team has clinched a spot in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
