Alternative Weekends with Chantal

by chantal.dunn on April 1, 2021, 08:04am. MST

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

This Alternative Long Weekend is presented to you by our friends at AGD beer, because all good days start with AGD beer and long weekends.*

Here are 3 things to check out:

1. Celebrate spring with the Wâpos

This is the last weekend you can see Wâpos at Amiskwaskahegan, Beaver Hills House Park on Jasper Ave right here in Edmonton. These illuminated rabbits are the newest instalment of the Downtown Spark series, which includes the Winter Birds Exhibit and the Fantastic Planet humanoids. The exhibit features six 12-foot-tall illuminated rabbit sculptures, with about 40 smaller rabbits along a path and around the park.

Indigenous artist Jason Carter designed the Wâpos, and created the exhibit with the help of Bridget Ryan.

2. Have some laughs with Play the Fool

Play the Fool is an artist-driven, non-profit theatre festival based right here in Edmonton. This year for the first time ever, starting on April Fool’s Day, they’re screening the top clowning and physical comedy short films.

“Our short film festival is sister to our Play The Fool Live Theatre Festival, and welcomes interpretations of clowning from all corners of the world. International and local films are jury selected. Engaging, creative content is more important than slick production values.”

The short films are free to watch, however you can donate anytime until Sunday, April 4th.

3. Watch the Oilers in action throughout the long weekend

This weekend there are two Oilers games going down. Both will be home games at Roger’s Place, one battle of Alberta against the Calgary Flames, and the other against the Vancouver Canucks.

The battle of Alberta will take place on Friday April 2nd, at 7 p.m. Then, they’ll play against Vancouver the day after, on Saturday April 3rd, at 8 p.m.

You can watch the games on Sportsnet.
