Alternative Weekends with Chantal

by chantal.dunn on March 25, 2021, 08:03am. MST

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Remember Earth Hour is on Saturday night! SONiC will be going all unplugged at 8:30 p.m.

Here are 3 more things to check out this weekend:

1. Hear new albums from AJR and Death From Above 1979

This Friday, March 26th, AJR will be releasing a brand new album called OK Orchestra and celebrating with an acoustic livestream. Access to the stream is free when you save the album.

OK Orchestra features their hit single “Bang” and their most recent track “Way Less Sad”.

The song is an optimistic look at the future and touches on mental health and the acceptance of not being okay.

In a statement AJR said that the song is “about how we’re really feeling in this moment. So much of last year felt apocalyptic and this year we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Things aren’t back to normal yet but we should be celebrating the small wins, even if they seem trivial.”

“We want every single song to be a concept that nobody’s ever talked about before,” Ryan Met told American Songwriter. “We try not to copy ourselves. I think to cope with that, we just say, ‘Let’s go deeper. Let’s mine even deeper into our lives.’”

You can pre-save OK Orchestra and get access to the livestream here.

This Friday, we get not one but two brand new albums! One from AJR, and the other from Death From Above 1979.

Is 4 Lovers will be their first album release since 2017. It was completely written, recorded, produced, and mastered by the two members of the band, Jesse F. Keeler and Sebastien Grainger.

The album has 10 tracks, including their latest single “One + One”.

Early reviews like from NME have said that “Is 4 Lovers is surely the band’s best work since their debut.”

You can pre-save the album here.

2. See the Fantastic Planet ‘humanoid’ displays

Recently people in the city have noticed a collection of giant ‘humanoids’, standing12-metres high, all around downtown Edmonton. These huge inflatable installations are actually pieces of art inspired by the 1973 Czech/French film Fantastic Planet!

“This stop-motion science fiction film, directed by Rene Laloux, depicts a story set in an unimaginably distant future, in a world of gargantuan humanoids and where human beings are a feral race.”

Here’s a list of all the locations they’re in so far:

  • Down There at City Hall Plaza: 24 hours
  • Peeping Corner at Sir Winston Churchill Square at TIX on the Square: noon-10:00pm
  • Poke at Sir Winston Churchill Square: noon-10:00pm
  • Comfort at Abbey Glen Park: noon-10:00pm
  • What’s That at Sir Winston Churchill Square: noon-10:00pm
  • Over at MacEwan University 105 Street Building Rooftop (noon-10:00pm)

3.Watch the Edmonton Oilers take on the Toronto Maple Leafs

This Saturday the Oilers will be playing against the Maple Leafs, in Toronto. This will be an important game for the Oilers as Toronto currently holds first place in the division.

This game will also come after a short break for the Oilers after the postponed Montreal games.

“I know (Oilers President Of Hockey Operation & General Manager) Ken (Holland) was on a call with the League again this morning but I haven’t talked to him since then,” coach Dave Tippett said. “As far as I know now, we’re Saturday night in Toronto and that’s what we’re focusing on. The rest is a work in progress.”

You can watch them play at 5 p.m. on Saturday, on Sportsnet.
