Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Weezer is releasing their new album OK Human

Tomorrow, January 29th, Weezer is releasing their 14th studio album OK Human. Although the title is a nod to Radiohead’s OK Computer, the musical inspiration behind album was actually The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds.

While recording the album this summer, the band used mainly analog technology and no electric guitar! Instead they were joined by a 38-piece orchestra, for the first time ever.

You can read more about the album and listen to their latest single “All My Favorite Songs” here.

2. Saturday Night Live is back, featuring Machine Gun Kelly

This Saturday is the first episode of Saturday Night Live for 2021, and it features Machine Gun Kelly as the musical guest. He’ll be performing music from his latest album Tickets To My Downfall.

The episode will air on NBC at 9:30 p.m., and will be hosted by John Krasinski. For more info click here.

3. Cage The Elephant are performing a Winter Benefit concert

This Saturday will be the first time Cage The Elephant has performed live since last spring, and it won’t be an unplugged set. The show will be a full concert livestream from Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

Proceeds from this Winter Benefit concert will go to Bread & Roses, which is a non-profit arts organization.

“The fundraiser will generate critical support for the nonprofit arts organization which produces free, live music and entertainment for Bay Area children, teens, adults, and elders who don’t have the ability to easily experience the uplifting power of the arts in any other way. ”

The livestream will air at 6 p.m., you can purchase tickets here.
