Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Participate in a Virtual ROO-ALITY music festival.

Bonaroo is moving this year’s festival online with Virtual ROO-ALITY. The festival is free and will include new and archived performances, along with some live panels. For example Haley Williams from Paramore will be leading Sanctuary of Self Love, a conversation centered around mental health, wellness, and gender with panelists Laura Jane Grace, Charli XCX, and more.

The live stream will bring new performances from David Lynch, Moon Taxi, Nathaniel Rateliff, and others.

Some of the archived Bonaroo performances will be from The White Stripes, Dave Matthews, Beastie Boys, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, and more. The Beastie Boy’s show included is actually from their last performance ever!

The Virtual ROO-ALITY festival will be a three-night broadcast starting Thursday, September 24th, until Saturday, September 26th on YouTube.

2. Listen to two brand new albums.

*Strong language in the following video.*

Since recording his new album Tickets To My Downfall with the help of blink-182’s Travis Barker, Machine Gun Kelly has had some ups and downs, especially when it comes to the album’s cover. However, the problems have been sorted and the album will be released as planned on Friday, September 25th.

On the same day, Arcade Fire’s Will Butler is releasing his solo album called Generations.

Win Butler recently said in a statement that songwriting for the next Arcade Fire record has also picked up during the pandemic, so we likely will hear new music from them soon as well.

3. Experience the opening of Deadmonton.

With safety precautions in place, this weekend will be the opening weekend for Deadmonton. There will be sanitizing stations, fewer groups, and enforced social distancing. As the video above says, the Deadmonton house is still expected to be just as scary as usual.
