Edmonton Fall Home Show: Random Renovation Questions.

Edmonton Fall Home Show 2016 is October 21st – 23rd at Edmonton Expo Centre. This is the biggest home renovation event of the year and we talked to EFHS contractor Josh Marchand (Marchand Construction) for some renovation tips. I was curious for advice on how a new homeowner goes into the Winter, and you can read a few things Josh had to say below. Ask Josh any random renovation questions you have at Edmonton Fall Home Show next weekend. You can even bring in pictures and concepts that you’d like Josh to take a look at.

Quick Tips: 

1) Have a contractor or an expert go through the house with you if you’re unsure what you need to renovate or update.

 Example: Get your furnace cleaned and when the worker is at your house try and ask any/all questions about it. These guys ooze valuable information.

2) Water Bibs! That is outside where you connect your hose to your house. For winter, the best thing you can do is disconnect the hose (older homes) or find the water shut off (newer homes). That’ll prevent freezing/cracking of the pipes.

3) Alberta is brutally dry in the winter. Your furnace will create even more dry air that could suck the moisture out of hardwood floors. Try a humidifier running around %28 – %30 to counter this.

4) The other side to that, humidity creates window sweating. So keep your blinds/curtains open and try and let as much air hit your window as possible. This will minimize moisture and prevent future problems like destruction of your window-frame finish or even decay of your house.
