benA couple weeks ago a number of artists/bands helped launched a new music streaming service called “Tidal.” Coldplay, Jack White, Jay-Z, Madonna and Kanye were just some of the names on hand. Basically Tidal is an artist owned music streaming service…so the money goes back to those who actually make the music. Makes sense. HOWEVER a growing number of bands are now speaking against it!

Both Mumford & Sons and Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) have slammed the service, pointing out that it only seems to be helping artists who are already rich. You can see Gibbards thoughts above, while Marcus Mumford saidWe don’t want to be tribal… And when they say it’s artist-owned, it’s owned by those rich, wealthy artists… What I’m not into is the tribalistic aspect of it – people trying to corner bits of the market, and put their face on it. That’s just commercial bulls**t. We hire people to do that for us rather than having to do that ourselves. We just want to play music, and I don’t want to align myself with Spotify, Beats, Tidal, or whatever.”
